How TF2 prices work
Every item is priced from its Steam Community Market sales and refreshed daily. Items that barely sell use up to a year of sales, and items with big price swings get an "unstable" tag.
What makes a TF2 item worth more
Unusuals and Australiums are the top tier of TF2 trading. After that, the extras on an item set its price:
- Unusual effect. The effect makes the hat. A god-tier effect like Burning Flames can be worth many times a low-tier effect on the same hat.
- Spells and paint. Halloween spells were limited-time, so spelled items carry a premium, and a popular paint adds to it.
- Craft number. Craft numbers up to #100 show in-game, and collectors pay extra for them.
- Killstreaks. A Professional Killstreak weapon, with its sheen and killstreaker, sells above the plain one.
- Quality. Strange, Vintage and Genuine items are separate Market items with their own prices.
The Steam Market lists Unusuals by hat name without the effect, so every effect gets the same price here. Traders price effects in keys on backpack.tf.
Keys and ref
Most TF2 trades are priced in Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys and refined metal (ref). Keys in your backpack count at their Steam Market price.
Steam Market price vs. cash
Market prices include Steam's 5% fee and Valve's 10% game fee, so selling there nets you about 13% less, paid as Steam Wallet funds you can't withdraw. Cash sites set their own prices.
